When it comes to friendships, our relationships are an ever-changing journey. As our lives develop and grow with time so do our friendships. Through break-ups, new jobs, marriages, babies, moving to another city or state, deaths of loved ones, and so much more, it is important to have friends by our side that will be there no matter what, without question. A friend that is willing to be there for the rollercoaster that we call life.
- A true friend is one that loves. Being considerate of another’s feelings by thinking of their needs before our own is one way we can show love. Also, by being a cheerleader for our friend – helping them reach their goals, believing in their dreams, and showing up to events that are important to them – is a simple way to give our support.
- A true friend is one that understands. Life can get busy and complicated. Not everything goes to plan and last minute changes to our schedules can interfere. We must understand this and know that it isn’t personal. Priorities may need to change and we need to be accommodating as once in awhile, we may be the ones that need to rearrange our plans and schedules.
- A true friend is one that is patient. Sometimes with friendships, we give more than we get. That is, however, how relationships are – just don’t let that be a constant in the friendship. Relationships that span over the years will experience highs and lows, giving more than the other, and being the one to make an effort. A real friend will be there no matter what with patience and love. Just as in our personal lives, our relationships need different things at different times along the journey.
- A true friend is one that forgives. When we do something wrong, a friend is someone who will see things beyond the surface and know that our intentions are always good. We are all humans and sometimes act in a way that is not reflective of who we are. Our friends understand that and forgive us, as we do for them.
With every twist and turn that life brings, a true friend is there for it all. Our main goal should be to be the best friend we possibly can to those in our lives. With mutual love, respect, and compassion, we can build friendships that can last a lifetime.
