Every year, we well-intentioned people make countless resolutions to ourselves as we enter the new year and each year, a depressing number of us fail New Year’s Resolutions! It has been reported that about 80% of resolutions are failed by February and by some estimates, only 8% of people achieve their resolutions. Fear not: Here is a resolution we can all achieve—and the benefits are immeasurable.

While resolving to learn how to play an instrument, to lose weight, or to finally start your first novel can be a daunting task—one which might be abandoned once February rolls around—seeking the guidance or knowledge to do accomplish these things is a doable goal. In 2018, we can all resolve to learn more from others.

Not only does this resolution remove much of the pressure, it also the provides tools and motivations we need. It’s much easier to stick to a goal by learning from those who have successfully accomplished our chosen goal.
Here are some great ways to learn from others in 2018:

Read a Book (or Seven)

Books are a fabulous way to learn something new! If you want to become a better cook this year, pick up some books on cooking from some of your favorite chefs. Perhaps you wanted to hone your woodworking skills? Yep, there are countless books on that topic as well! And, of course, if you’re a writer, simply reading new books is a great way to become a better writer yourself—there are also books on writing itself.

Join a Community

When I started my Facebook community “Talking Fiction” I never dreamt it would one day grow to over 6,500 authors from countless backgrounds and experience levels all interested in learning more about writing from their peers. The truth is, everyone wants to learn from the newest to the most seasoned veterans. Joining a group or community like mine is a great way to learn from others on a daily basis and a wealth of knowledge can be gleaned from many unique perspectives. No matter if you want to take your gardening to the next level or perhaps become a better jogger, there is a community out there for you!

Believe it or not, YouTube is home to an absolute BOUNTY of information from experts and amateurs alike. Do a simple search for something you wish to know more about and you’ll be absolutely floored by the amount of content is available. From home building to knitting to playing guitar, there truly is something for everyone. Videos will take you through very detailed steps showing you how to do most anything.

Find a Mentor

If you’re lucky enough to have access to someone who can provide you with one on one opportunities to learn, it’s a great way to go! Like in the old days when mentorships and apprenticeships were how many people’s careers began, learning from a master can provide you with a level of understanding beyond most other avenues.

This year, set a resolution you can achieve! A little time each day learning from others can help you achieve your long-term goals with a combination of motivation, knowledge, and empowerment!

P.S. If you’re a writer and would like to learn from other writers, join my Facebook group TALKING FICTION today!
