Summer is a time for enjoying the great outdoors and—of course—knocking out your summer reading list. While you’ll likely love the experience of the task at hand, you’ll always find an opportunity to read a few chapters. I decided to write this blog by incorporating some of my friend’s and family’s favorite ways of enjoying a book during summertime. So let’s get right into it, with five summer activities that are great for readers.

Road Trips

There’s nothing quite like cruising down the open road on a sunny summer day. Thinking about your destination, seeing the sights along the way and of course gas station stops to refuel the car—and yourself. With all that extra time to kill, a good book becomes your best friend. The page numbers count down almost as quickly as the miles and those moments you look up to think about what you’re reading are met with a new sight or terrain. If you’re traveling with just one other person, you may elect to enjoy your book in audiobook format to share the story with your traveling partner, but don’t feel bad if you want to bury your nose in that thriller you’ve been enjoying.

America is home to some of the most beautiful parks, brimming with pristine, breathtaking environments. If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, you’ll feel these places beckon to you, enticing you to explore their natural wonders. When packing for a hike to explore a trail, don’t forget to include one of your favorite books for when you stop and rest. Not only will a good book give you more time to enjoy your surroundings, but it is a unique way to experience a story, especially if it’s one you’ve read before. There’s nothing quite like sitting at the edge of a big, open canyon with snow capped mountains and fields of wildflowers following the wind with a great story in the palm of your hands.

The Beach

Sand, surf and sun are the three main ingredients of any good trip to the beach. Enjoying a cool beverage with the sand between your toes, while feeling the warmth of the sun and listening to the waves ebb and flow can only be made better with an enthralling book. For an avid reader, this may be the most desirable way to read! Being from California, I’m very lucky to live so close to the Pacific Coastline and the beautiful beaches that call it home. I enjoy listening to audiobooks on walks along the coast, and see many readers along the way sitting out on a towel with a book in hand.

Caffeine junkies unite! The cafe is a perfect setting for a good book. A strong cup of coffee complements a great story very well, from the aroma to the warmth. If your favorite cafe anything like mine, there will be an assortment of comfortable, oversized chairs to sink into before tucking into your book. It’s the perfect escape on a lazy afternoon or on a quick lunch break. Add in a homemade pastry and who could resists?

The humble park. One of the great bastions of civilization. Even in the most daunting cities, a park can feel like it’s own little world, hidden among the skyscrapers, traffic and bustling life. Birds chirping, children laughing, trees swaying. Could city life get any better? Well, yes, of course. A good book is all it takes. So if your summer excursion doesn’t include a trip out of town, there’s always your local parks for enjoying a good read.

Summer is a time to explore your surroundings as well as those imagined in the minds of countless authors. So if you get a chance, take a little trip with a great book in hand—whether it’s to Glacier National Park or the park down the street.
